“Rosuvastatin (a statin) is a commonly used statin for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases,” said co-first author and co-investigator, Dr. Sarah M. Gendler-Dowry of the San Diego Center for Health Promotion. “This study shows that rosuvastatin (a statin) is safe and effective in a subset of patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, even in patients who are already at high risk for cardiovascular disease.”
The study included patients with primary hypercholesterolemia of LDL-C >160 mg/dL or risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and patients with high cholesterol, who had a high-risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Southern California.
“This is the first time statin use has been studied in patients with hypercholesterolemia,” said co-first author, Dr. Jennifer A. Gendler-Dowry of the University of Southern California. “We wanted to see whether rosuvastatin could be used safely as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk.”
Rosuvastatin is the active ingredient in the approved statin Lipitorotide, a cholesterol-lowering medication used to lower LDL-C and total-cholesterol in patients with coronary artery disease, according to a new study.
The study was published inin April. The team included 30 participants with primary hypercholesterolemia and 40 participants with high cholesterol. Of those, 40 had LDL-C <160 mg/dL and 10 had risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Of those with high cholesterol, the study found that rosuvastatin was safe in all groups, with no difference between the groups in the percentage of patients who developed new or worsening cardiovascular disease. The study was stopped early in the study because the results had been lost due to the loss of participants.
